WHILE WE WERE WAITING

Take a step into a whimsical imagery to observe honest executions of physicality, interspersed with thought provoking monologues. Returning home with her most recent work, Kate Hilliard is pleased to present the Canadian premiere of While We Were Waiting, an intimate look at the emotional and physical state of being present.

Hailing from the world renowned Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City; Drew de Jesus, Lauren Ferebee, Tricia Olds, Adam Roper and Josh Rowe take the stage moving to an orginal score composed and played live by pianist Laurence Gingold. This physical theatre piece was developed in New York City as part of the Movement and Dance Artists in Residencey (MAD AIR) program at Stella Alder Studio of Acting & Hard Clurman Center for New Works in Movement and Dance Theatre.

Hilliard's work focuses on our need to reflect in order to establish belonging and attachment, in a world that celebrates the importance of making plans and setting goals for the future. We look back and we look forward, but we rarely appreciate the moment - she asks you to embrace the moment.

Where the Blood Mixes
By Kevin Loring

The powerful work of Kevin Loring, Where the Blood Mixes, returns February 24 to March 6, 2010.

Loring's work in an incredible accomplishment and a study on his own people, the N'lakap'mux First Nation who live where the Thompson meets the Fraser. Taking a fearless look at the Native community's most painful emotional scars while still casting a ray of light, this Vancouver Playhouse/ Belfry Theatre/Savage Production presentation received rave reviews and awards in its first production.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAID:

"Kevin Loring has written a superb study of his own people, the N'lakap'mux First Nation, who live where the Thompson meets the Fraser. What started as a one-man monologue for a student project at Studio 58 is now a fully formed drama -- with plenty of humour -- about the men and women whose survival of cultural genocide still carries terrible scars."

The Vancouver Sun

"This is Loring's first play, and it's a major accomplishment. The script is very much part of a social process - tears flowed freely in the audience - and this relevance contributes to the impact. But Loring also has impressive control of his craft: he creates an easy flow between the quirkily specific and the archetypal."

The Georgia Straight

"Sensitive, excellent performances over 90 uninterrupted minutes makes this show compelling, and it has all the elements of a great story: love, betrayal, mystery, reconciliation and hope."

The Vancouver Courier

"One of Loring's skills as a playwright is to blend the poetic and the realistic. On the one hand, he (along with visual designer Carl Stromquist, projection designer Jamie Nesbitt and lighting designer Itai Erdal) gives an imagistic feel to his characters, at times turning them into iconic if not downright archetypal figures. But he can as quickly turn around and provide the characters with down-to-earth bar chatter, questioning monologues that examine the tragedy in their lives and minimalist, heartfelt scenes of connection."

NOW Magazine

"What puts Where the Blood Mixes into a special category is that it tells a story that is of our time and our people (both aboriginal and non-aboriginal need to know about this part of our recent history). As Canadians, we need to see stories like this one, no matter how strong the compulsion is to avert our eyes. That is why Where the Blood Mixes is far more important than any half-baked import from the West End or Broadway could ever hope to be."

Plank Magazine

"A strong and moving story about a native American man being re-united with the daughter he lost to social services as a child, but still dealing with his own childhood in an abusive institution."

The Irish Times
