BE MORE CHILL – xoxo film & TV theatre co.

Jeremy Heere is just an average teenager. That is, until he finds out about “The Squip,” a tiny supercomputer that promises to bring him everything he desires most: a date with Christine, an invite to the raddest party of the year and a chance to survive life in his suburban New Jersey high school. But is being the most popular guy in school worth the risk? A hit on Broadway and in the West End, Be More Chill is based on the novel by Ned Vizzini.

Music and Lyrics by Joe Iconis

Bordertown Cafe

Bordertown Cafe | Dec 5th, 7 PM

Written by Kelly Rebar

In Bordertown Café, seventeen-year-old Jimmy faces the archetypal Canadian dilemma: stay home in Canada, with all its obvious flaws, or go south (young man) to the Land of Opportunity. Jimmy’s conflict reflects how Canadians have struggled to negotiate a unique identity in the shadow of its brash, superpower neighbor since confederation.

Enemy Lines

Running Time: 50 mins approx.

by Mayumi Lashbrook
a Firehall Arts Centre Presentation

Enemy Lines is a live dance performance that looks at how a climate of fear led to the incarceration of Japanese Canadians. Held by curiosity, choreographer Mayumi Lashbrook looks back at the actions taken against her family during World War II. Suddenly deemed a threat after the Pearl Harbour attack in 1941, over 22,000 Canadians of Japanese descent were forcibly removed from the coastline of British Columbia – their lives forever altered.

Lashbrook seeks to understand these events in Canadian history and the hold it has had on her life. Her work illuminates the cycles of fear-based oppression and intolerant thinking that still afflicts us today. In Enemy Lines, she elucidates our hardwired need for each other, and the way that disconnection can hinder our growth.

Enemy Lines is a tender reminder of the fractures of our collective past and the possibilities for our shared future.

The Undeniable Accusations of Red Cadmium Light

Running Time: 2hrs approx. + intermission

by Drew Hayden Taylor
a Firehall Arts Centre Production

Award-winning Ojibway playwright, author, journalist, and filmmaker Drew Hayden Taylor returns to his Firehall home this spring with a provocative new play that dives into the high-stakes world of counterfeit Indigenous art.

In a world of fakes, who can you trust?

“Red Cadmium Light” paint was created in 1982. So when a painting attributed to legendary Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau is dated earlier than that – and contains the pigment – it can only mean one thing: it’s a fake.

‘Nazhi’ runs an art gallery on the Otter Lake First Nation, specializing in the work of Norval Morrisseau and other renowned Indigenous artists. Her daughter ‘Beverly’ is a respected Indigenous educator on the verge of a major career breakthrough. But when a reporter begins to dig into the world of counterfeit Indigenous art, a discovery is made that risks jeopardizing both women’s careers, and their relationship, forever.

The Undeniable Accusations of Red Cadmium Light asks urgent questions about authenticity, identity, and the cost of truth.
