Produced by Tara Cheyenne Performance
Presented by Firehall Arts Centre

Solo dance-theatre (stand-up comedy with dance breaks) by veteran dance artist Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg.

Can one reimagine gender from inside a middle-aged body while standing at the playground caught in the no "man's" land between the "moms" and the "dads"? Pants takes a deep dive into the shallow end of the gender binary through raw comedy and dance that crawls inside our "packaging". What happens to one's flimsy identity, built on blending, when one's offspring sheds the binary before recess? Profoundly personal storytelling is delivered through alarming comedy and movement that reveals the heart of the matter.

Peace Country

Running Time: 2 hrs 20 mins

by Pedro Chamale
Produced by rice & beans theatre
Presented by Firehall Arts Centre

Inspired by playwright Pedro Chamale’s growing-up in Chetwynd, BC, Peace Country is an examination of intercultural friendship, the realities of northern living and the vilification of northern communities in the fight against the climate crisis. Set in a small rural town in BC’s Northern interior, a new political party has swept into office with the promise of big changes: changes that could put the nail in the coffin for a little carbon-economy town, that is, if climate change doesn’t wipe it out first. In a time where it feels easy to spit rhetoric and blame each other, a familiar face in the party forces childhood friends to have tough conversations and work together for change. Through Peace Country, we see a plea for dialogue around climate action, in a time of great division.

Tree Drum

Tree Drum is told by Bill Beauregarde (Cree/Enoch.) It explores the personal life story and experience of Indigenous theatre artist Bill Beauregarde, who was taken from his family at the age of three. Bill shared the story with long-time friend and theatre artist, Susanna Uchatius (Austrian/Eastern European), that at 9 years old, while in a group home, the crab apple tree in the backyard repeatedly called to him. It wanted to be a drum. So, Bill cut the tree down and made his first drum. This was the beginning of a remarkable journey - an intuitive discovery of who he is.

After sharing conversations over the past three years, the "TREE DRUM's" branches grew. The story of the journey stretched from the past represented by two youth, Clayton Shanoss (Nisga, Gitxsan) and Isaiah Heyoka, and into the future, as acknowledged Elder, Bill Beauregarde, keeps the drum heartbeat alive.

This is a workshop production by Theatre Terrific. For more information, please visit www.theatreterrific.ca

THE BOOK OF MY SHAMES

Running Time: 85 Mins | No Intermission

Vancouver City Opera is pleased to present the Vancouver premiere of The Book of My Shames by Isaiah Bell and Sean Guist at the Firehall Arts Centre Thursday, May 18 through Saturday, May 20, 2023. The Book of My Shames is a touring, original one-man theatre production performed by Victoria-based tenor Isaiah Bell, co-created by Isaiah and director Sean Guist, with original words and music by Isaiah, accompanied by a four-person band.

In The Book of My Shames, a persistent emptiness of heart drives a youth from a restrictive fundamentalist commune to a passion for bad men, and on to a successful but strangely hollow life on the stage. Combining rapid-fire monologues and personal stories with an array of original music — chansons and ballads, cleverly touching cabaret songs, and expansive operatic scenas — this “comic, wrenching, and personal tour-de-force” reminds us that desire, rejection, shame, and the longing to be loved are themes common to us all. Isaiah just does it with operatic pathos and a wink, and possibly the most memorable use of a red plastic bucket you have yet to see.

Reviews of The Book of My Shames describe an experience that is “impossibly beautiful”, “poignant, thoughtful, raw and honest”, “touching, very funny, disturbing and sometimes quite revolting”, and a “fascinating creation”.

Canadian tenor Isaiah Bell began his professional career as tenor in City Opera’s production of Britten’s Curlew River (2010), in the role of Madwoman, which led to a national career including lead roles with the Canadian Opera Company. More recently, Isaiah led COV's new English adaptation of The Human Voice (2021). More about Isaiah at www.isaiahbell.com

Happy Valley

Running Time: 60 Mins | No Intermission

The Firehall closes its 2022-23 season with the world premiere of rice & beans theatre’s ‘Happy Valley’ from Thursday, May 25 to Sunday, June 4.

Created and performed by award-winning playwright Derek Chan 陳嘉昊, ‘Happy Valley’ is a new solo, interdisciplinary performance piece that dissects the historic, political, and cultural context surrounding Hong Kong’s current democratic struggles told through text, song, multimedia, and music.

Mainland China promised Hong Kong a high level of autonomy and the right to self-determination back in the ‘80s, in preparation for the 1997 Handover from British colonization. It has been almost 25 years since Chris Patten and his family tearfully waved Hong Kong goodbye at Victoria Harbour. It has been 3 years since the first yellow raincoat drifted from the sky at Pacific Place. And it has been never since the people of Hong Kong had any agency over their fate. Fast forward to 2023: everything that has happened since is in danger of having never happened at all. To us, democracy is a luxury.

A Christmas Carol

Running Time: 2h including intermission

“Blue Bridge’s A Christmas Carol is a pure joy to watch…Talwar delivers much more than a simple reading. He portrays all the characters, making each one distinctive and memorable, nimbly navigating a number of accents. It is, above all, the laughter of relief. And we the audience chuckle along too, having taken a journey both wild and wonderful.” – Victoria Times Colonist

The Firehall Arts Centre celebrates the holiday season with its presentation of A Christmas Carol from Wednesday, December 14 to Saturday, December 24, 2022.

Produced by Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre, all 40 characters in this one-man version of the familiar tale are performed by Stratford/Shaw stalwart Sanjay Talwar for a whirlwind show that will make your heart twinkle.

“I’m thrilled to be able to present a classic tale this holiday season,” says Artistic & Executive Producer Donna Spencer. “It’s one of my favourite stories and a wonderful reminder of what Christmas is all about. Sanjay Talwar’s performance is such a gift, and I hope Firehall audiences will revel in the warmth of this production.”
