WOMEN OF THE FUR TRADE

Running Time: Under 2hrs + 15mins intermission

by Frances Koncan
a Firehall Arts Centre Production

Set in eighteen hundred and something-something, somewhere upon the banks of a Reddish River in Treaty One Territory, three very different women with a preference for 21st century slang find themselves stuck in a fort having tea and sharing their views on life, love, and Louis Riel. Playwright Frances Koncan shifts the focus in this powerfully funny satire from the male gaze on history to the power of women and their place in the rapidly changing world of the Canadian fur trade.

I REMEMBER…

Running Time: 65mins approx.

Produced by Joe INK
a Firehall Arts Centre Presentation

Combining dance, storytelling, and video in an emotional, amusing and relatable reflection on aging, this Joe INK production is inspired by choreographer Joe Laughlin’s memories and lessons learned from 40 years as a dancer. His message – to keep moving and to remember… you are never too old to do what you love.

“I still feel the same way I always have, inside. I still love dancing even though my body and physical ability is on the decline… and I’m barreling towards the end, quite literally! It’s the slow slide of your body into your 60’s and beyond.” Joe Laughlin

Event Details

I remember is a full length work being created and performed by award-winning dancer & choreographer Joe Laughlin. At age 63, Laughlin is a senior Canadian artist who’s been performing for over 40 years and this piece is an exploration of a dancer’s aging body and how that informs his art now and into the future. Joe is remembering his life in dance, competitive gymnastics, working in South Africa, Move It! and the many talented artists he has worked with over the years. Lots of memories and life lessons communicated in a highly personal and authentic way. This show will inspire everybody to continue moving forward and remember… you are never too old to do what you love.

RIDGE

Running Time: 75 mins

by Brendan McLeod and The Fugitives
a Firehall Arts Centre Presentation

Often called the “battle that made Canada,” Vimy Ridge resulted in over 10,000 Canadian casualties. Through direct storytelling, verbatim theatre, and live music, The Fugitives examine misconceptions and varying perspectives around the battle, while drawing parallels to other formative events in our nation’s past. A Globe and Mail Top ten arts event of 2020, the show features inventive musical interpretations of WWI soldier songs, which were nominated for the 2022 JUNO for Best Traditional Roots Album. A vivid, kinetic ride through history, as well as an intimate, personal examination of our connection to the past, Ridge is a visceral work that passionately argues against the exploitation of young lives.

EMPTY-HANDED

Running Time: 75mins - no intermission

Presented by Firehall Arts Centre
Co-Produced by The Biting School and battery opera

We are sitting in the madness of the human experience.
Forgetting we are the guests that the daffodils invited in a long time ago.
We are sitting in stillness and finding the trails.
The trails that will eventually take us home.

Empty-Handed is a contemporary dance piece that explores the journeys of five cosmic characters through themes of darkness, deception, and greed.
Through expressive movement, choreography and storytelling, the dancers create a world that transcends time and culture. Each character guides the viewer through an emotional arc that honours the essence of their personal revolution.

The Firehall Arts Centre presents The Biting School in their premiere production of EMPTY-HANDED. In this new work, choreographer Arash Khakpour and his company conjure up images of everyday life that transcend cultural and historical boundaries.
